A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE OPIOID TREATMENT TOOL

Recovery Unplugged has been a trusted and reputable licensed Vivitrol® provider for years, and we have seen the medication help numerous clients successfully manage their opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms in their everyday lives. A Vivitrol shot is a slow-acting form of naltrexone administered once a month via intramuscular injection by an addiction specialist, or in a controlled medical setting such as a treatment center by a licensed medical professional.

Vivitrol treatment prevents the risk of relapse for patients being treated for opioid addiction after the patient has completed detoxification. Its infrequent administration and incredibly low potential for diversion makes it a comparatively safer alternative to other anti-opioid medications such as Suboxone or methadone. Vivitrol detox is not meant to replace traditional treatment, but should be administered as part of a larger overall treatment program. Eligibility for Vivitrol treatment is determined by patients’ physicians and addiction treatment professionals.

HOW DOES VIVITROL TREATMENT WORK?

Vivitrol detox and treatment works by attaching to opioid receptors in the brain to block their effects. Although it prevents the feelings of euphoria that patients experience when taking opioids, it doesn’t diminish the pleasurable sensations associated with other activities. Vivitrol injections gradually decrease over the course of a month until it is time for a new dose. For patients taking Vivitrol for alcohol addiction, it’s important that they quit drinking before taking Vivitrol injections. Patients taking the drug for opioid dependency should not initiate the process until after they’ve completed a comprehensive course of medically supervised detox and have spoken to their physician regarding eligibility requirements. Vivitrol withdrawal symptoms can mirror those of opioids, but are often less severe.

SIDE EFFECTS OF VIVITROL TREATMENT

Patients should not take Vivitrol if they are still taking opioids or suffering from any symptoms of physical withdrawal, and should wait at least one to two weeks after taking any opioids before being administered Vivitrol to avoid any negative side effects. Patients that use opioids of any kind while taking Vivitrol run the risk of accidental overdose, coma, or death. Side-effects of Vivitrol detox can include, but are not limited to:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Anxiety
  • Weakness
  • Thirst
  • Muscle Aches
  • Mood Swings
  • Lightheadedness
  • Increased Heart Rate

Naltrexone may also cause liver damage. If you begin to experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Do not make any changes to your Vivitrol routine without consulting your physician.

CAN I OVERDOSE ON VIVITROL

Although Vivitrol is regarded as a safer alternative to drugs like methadone and even buprenorphine, the reality is that is still possible to overdose on opioids when taking the drug. One of the ways this occurs is when users who are experiencing Vivitrol’s blocking effects take too many opioids to counteract them. Vivitrol users may also be sensitive to lower amounts of opioids during detox and withdrawal management; at the time of their next Vivitrol treatment; when they miss their dose; initially after stopping Vivitrol treatment. Recovery Unplugged offers comprehensive guidance during each stage of the Vivitrol treatment process so eligible users fully understands the risks and benefits of the drug.
